I had a great experience recently being an advisor at the Sundance Documentary edit lab. We spent a week at the Sundance resort in Park City, Utah working w/ a handful of really strong film projects that are currently in the editing phase. It was a stellar group of advisors – the guy who edited “The Crash Reel,” the woman who edited “The Case Against 8,” the fellow who made “Sherman’s March,” and the guy who edited “Grizzly Man” . . . I was honored to be there.

 I will be doing a lecture on “liveness and cinema” at UnionDocs in Brooklyn on June 27th. The talk will cover the history of combining film and performance—from the Benshi tradition to the travelogue to the Rocky Horror Picture Show—as well as look at contemporary filmmakers who are incorporating performative elements into their work in interesting ways. This is a subject that has fascinated me for some time, and is at the heart of my current filmmaking practice, so the talk has been a pleasure to put together. Hope to see you there!

I made a short film for the Kronos Quartet that’s going to screen during their 40th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall on March 28th. The piece is a 5-minute visual poem on the group’s rich history and the contents of their archive in San Francisco—a really fun project to put together.

We recently premiered The Measure of All Things at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and the screenings went really, really well. With this kind of live cinema piece, you never really know what it’s actually like until you screen it for a real audience—is it going to be too long? Too short? Confusing? Too dark?

We did two sold-out screenings at the Yarrow and both were terrific. Here are some photos. We’re now setting up other screenings—some will be with yMusic and some will be with my long-time collaborators the Quavers. Stay tuned for details.

I put together a new short film called A Cinematic Study of Fog in San Francisco for the Oakland Museum. It’s a single-channel installation in one of the main galleries, so it’s always running if you are interested in checking it out. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out; it’s a short piece – 10 minutes long – but it includes many of my favorite moments from the ongoing project of shooting fog with Andy Black. Things keep rolling along with The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller. We did some of our best screenings yet recently at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Detroit Institute of Art.
